This agreement forms a legally binding agreement between you, the Host, and us, the Network Operator, surrounding the provision of eduroam the Wireless Network using our equipment, the Node.

Definitions

  • The Host is defined as the signatory in Section 2 of this agreement.
  • The Network Operator is defined as the Southampton Open Wireless Network. A research project within the Electronics and Computer Science (ECS) at the University of Southampton and the organisation responsible for the Nodes.
  • The Node is a lightweight wireless access point which may be one of several different hardware platforms. It is supplied with antenna and power supply.
  • The Service is defined as the wireless networks broadcast by the Node, which includes the internationally recognised eduroam network and other networks as the Network Operator may define from time to time.

Section 1 – The Agreement

  1. The Host must provide evidence that they are a member of the University of Southampton, and if they cease to be a member of the University they will notify the Network Operator promptly and return the Node.
  2. The Host agrees that they have a working, active internet connection with a minimum downstream speed of 1Mbps or higher and that they have permission of the bill-payer to connect the Node.
  3. The Host confirms that the Node shall be placed in a location at least 100m from any academic institution that has the eduroam wireless network and in the most appropriate location to provide the best coverage.
  4. The Host agrees that the Node remains the property of the Network Operator and will return the Node when requested.
  5. The Network Operator is responsible for maintenance of the Node and will make reasonable efforts to contact the Host in the event of needing:
    1. Physical access to the Node.
    2. The Host to perform basic operations such as disabling or restarting the Node.
  6. The Network Operator provides the Service using the Node which delivers a wireless network eduroam for the purposes of general internet usage to authenticated users.
  7. The Service operates using the Host's internet connection and the Host shall notify the Network Operator if, in the delivery of the Service, the Service is adversely affecting the internet connection.
  8. The Host shall make reasonable endeavours to keep the Service provided by the Node from the Network Operator operational at all times and notify the Network Operator if there will be any extended period where the Node is unavailable.
  9. At the request of the Network Operator, the Host shall return the Node in a timely fashion.
  10. The Host is liable for the sum of up to £30 if the Node is returned in an unusable condition that the Network Operator determines was due to malicious or unlawful activity or otherwise against the terms of this agreement.
  11. The Host must not alter the Node in any way, shape or form unless requested to do so by the Network Operator, including, but not limited to replacement of the firmware, or modifying the equipment.
  12. The Node logs certain private data about people who connect to the Service as necessary to comply with local regulations and this information will remain only accessible to appropriately privileged representatives of the Network Operator.
  13. If the Host moves to a different address, the Host agrees to move the Node and notify the Network Operator accordingly so that their records can be updated. The Host also agrees to check the terms of this agreement to ensure that they are still compliant.
